Customs Revenue Collection Chase Heats On, As TinCan Customs Joins Trillion Naira Record, Seizures worth N4.5B DPV in 10 Months

The Tin Can Island Port Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), undoubtedly regarded as the second largest revenue collection command of the service has continue to prove a formidable force to beat in the revenue heated race of the service, year in year out. 

With the attainment of whooping revenue generation of N1,000,000,000,000.00 that is One Trillion Naira as at October 25th, 2024, the command is said to be on a super revenue collection trajectory of the service which closely followed its Apapa command counterpart. 

The declaration of the above unprecedented duty collection as at October 25th, 2024 was followed after the disclosure of N986.3billion revenue collection revealed by the present hardworking and intelligent Customs Area Controller (CAC) of the Command, Comptroller Dera Nnadi mni on Tuesday October 22, 2024, when he paid host to the executive members of the League of Maritime Editors (LOME) led by the new President, Pastor Remi Itie (Mrs), who were on a courtesy visit in his office.             

The CAC during the interaction revealed that the command through dedication and commitment to duty recorded the revenue generation sum of N986.3bn in Ten (10) months, between January and October 22, 2024.           

The CAC who has overtime proven to be a highly dedicated officer of customs with on-the-job meticulousness, described the revenue collection figure as very significant considering the fact that the entire revenue collection of the command in preceding year 2023 was N716,478,454,099.74bn.

This however signifies that, the command as at October 2024 (10 months) had already surpassed the entire revenue collection in year 2023 with a hooting surplus of over N476billion, painting a revenue collection scenario never before attained in the command.

Similarly, the CAC who praised members of the League for the emergence of the first female President to take charge of affairs of the veteran packed association in the over 25 years of its existence, also said that the command under his watch has performed creditably in the anti-smuggling campaign of the service with massive seizures during the period under review.

According to Comptroller Nnadi, most of the spectacular seizures made by the command have already been witnessed, as he also do not want to preempt the subsequent ones for possibly showcase by the CG of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, noting members of the league would soon physically witnessed more that is in the kitty of the command which awaits unveiling.

The CAC however puts the Duty Paid Value (DPV) of the various contraband seizures that fell short of the nation’s trade rules at N4.5bn.

He also noted that, the anti-smuggling posture of the command just like her revenue feat is as well significant when compared with the last year 2023 seizure record which had a cumulative DPV of N1.51bn equivalent of items that were seized for the entire year.

By this, it means that the command in just ten (10) months has made significant anti-smuggling record feat with a surplus seizures DPV figure of N3.4bn. This spectacular anti-smuggling record also led to the huge commendation meted out by the CAC on the Enforcement Unit of the command led by Deputy Comptroller GI Aliyu, who the Comptroller described as doing a ‘youmans’ job for the command with through robust collaboration.

Comptroller Dera Nnadi however commended the Comptroller General of the Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR and his management team, for giving officers and men of the Command all the support and motivation that have enhanced their performance.

He also commended the officers and men of the Command, not leaving out the always supportive stakeholders who keyed into the frontline positive measures of his led management for genuine declaration of their consignments and accordingly, payment of appropriate duties, to record this milestone feat.

Nnadi said that the management of the Customs led by Adeniyi is aware that the federal government relies so much on the revenue from the Customs to offset some obligations to Nigerians and that the command is very proud to contribute to this objective.

He added that the Customs Command is always ready to collaborate with traditional stakeholders in line with the fundamental pillars of the CGC, Adeniyi, with the vision of “collaboration, consolidation and innovation”.

He disclosed that every week, the Command chooses a new slogan to help motivate officers and men of the Command in their job, as well as stakeholders, while he revealed this running week’s slogan as “Reform or Regret”.                    

Meanwhile, during the question and answer session, the CAC said, even with the positive effect of Naira to dollar exchange rate, the entire trade process were characterized by low downturn of cargo throughput which would have marred the current revenue collection of the command being celebrated today should they did not indulge in positive frantic measures at plugging revenue leakages, putting in place a more enhanced cargo clearance processes that ultimately attracted traders, as well as putting in place mechanism to lure stakeholders to the positive seamless trade trend currently being enjoyed.           

He opined that, the present TinCan command now deals with more genuine traders, as it has succeeded in weeding out most unrepentant traders that had were hitherto a clog in the wheel of progress in the operations of the command, and thus sanity which have beckoned in the entire operations of the command.

He was also quick to state that, efforts are also on top gear to keep talking to fall-out traders on the need to genuinely reconsider the use of the command various platforms for their trade which comes with a lot of benefits.

In her remark, the President of League, Mrs Remi Itie congratulated the Customs Command for all the achievements and the efforts of the Controller in revenue generation and anti-smuggling.

Mrs Itie said that she was not surprised that Nnadi has been performing creditably in Tin Can Island port considering his impressive records while serving in Seme Border.

She promised that members of the League will always support the leadership of the Customs, Adeniyi, and the entire Customs management in their national assignment at the seaports, airports and border stations.
