NIMASA ALERTS EMERGENCY RESPONSE OVER OIL SPILL AT SPDC BONNY TERMINAL

The Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has triggered an alert in a bid to contain the spread of oil spill at a portion of  Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) with the aim of mitigating the effect on surrounding communities.               

The agency  through a recent press statement signed by the Head of its Public Relations Unit, Osagie Edward, FNIPR, had alerted the public of an oil spill that occurred at the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) loading terminal, SMI, in Bonny, Rivers State on Saturday, December 14, 2024, stating that NIMASA is actively watching situation concerning the recent oil spill.

The statement said that the incident resulted from a ruptured pipeline. SPDC has promptly shut down the affected pipeline and deployed containment booms to protect the neighboring communities.

It further noted that, although the spill has reached the shoreline, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) is actively monitoring the situation from an emergency operations center.    According to the press release, NIMASA is collaborating with SPDC and other relevant stakeholders to assess the extent of the spill and determine necessary follow-up actions.

The statement however advised members of the public to remain calm as NIMASA is committed to mitigating the impact of the spill and restore affected areas.
