Western Marine Customs Hands Over Cannabis Stative Seizures worth over N704m to NDLEA

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Western Marine Command (WMC) has once again showcased another spectacular Seizure of Cannabis Sativa which was in turn handed over to officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

At the recent handing over exercise at the command’s headquarters in Ibafon, Apapa, Lagos, the Customs Area Controller (CAC) of the Command, Comptroller OA Salefu gave a detailed statement on the amount of Cannabis Sativa that was being transfered to the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

With a total of 120 sacks containing 10,551 loaves of cannabis sativa giving a total value of Seven Hundred and Four Million, Five Hundred and Eight Thousand Naira (#704,518,000.00), Salefu disclosed that, the illicit drugs were seized in three different operations in the periods when officers and men of the Western Marine Command were carrying out their routine enforcement operations at Jegemo Island opposite Iworo Ajido Waterfront and Asipa Beach along Seme Borders on the 29th of November, 2023; 2nd of December, 2023 and 9th of January, 2024 respecctively.

CAC Salefu added that the seizure is a product of hard work, dedication and bravery of officers who worked with diligence and integrity as well as the Command’s wide network of intelligence.

Furthermore, he said traders of the banned substance are still at large, but promised that with thorough investigation and cooperation with the NDLEA, they will all be apprehended.

At the occasion to receive the illegal substance with his men was the Marine Commander of the NDLEA, Paul Ahom.

During the handover exercise, Comptroller Salefu in his address said “In upholding the spirit of the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed between the Nigeria Customs Service and the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency on the 4th of April 2023 to ensure synergy and collaboration in tackling the illicit drugs along Nigeria’s entry and exit points, the Service under the leadership of the CGC BA Adeniyi has directed the Western Marine Command to hand over a total of 120 sacks containing 10,551 loaves of cannabis sativa with a total value of Seven Hundred and Four Million, Five Hundred and Eight Thousand

Naira (#704,518,000.00) only to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA)”.

However, the Marine Commander of the NDLEA, Paul Ahom praised the collaborative efforts of the two agencies in trying to rid the nation of illegal substances and their harmful effects and promised to continue to cement the relationship for the betterment of the nation.

While receiving the seizures, the Commander of Narcotics, NDLEA, Paul Ahon, commended the Western Marine Customs for its synergy with the drug enforcement agency.

The NDLEA would continue to build on its partnership with Customs in a bid to curb the smuggling of drugs into the country, Ahon added.

The CAC also charged Nigerians to desist from illegal cross border trade practices, stressing that it has huge consequences for the general economic and health welfare of the citizens.
