The current leading Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) enforcement maestro, Mohammed S. Shuaibu has bowed unto the gracious gift of elevation, as he joins the Abuja hierarchy having been elevated to the management level with the rank of an Assistant Comptroller General of Customs (ACG).

To crown the elevation, his exemplary service to the nation and over the years dedication to duty paid off with his immediate deployment to administer leadership from one of the most coveted and eyed seat of the management cadre, ACG Headquarters, the engine room of the service.

The handing over ceremony to another anti-smuggling guru, Comptroller Gambo I Aliyu at the Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘A’, however witnessed a huge turnout of officers and men, stakeholders, friends and well-wishers with outpour of encomiums on his personality for his exemplary leadership role at the nation’s foremost anti-smuggling unit, and his humane touch on about all lives that crossed his path.

Amidst the handover exercise held at the unit’s Conference hall, on Wednesday December 10, 2025, was highlights of major achievements while his tenure lasted.

The exercise, according to our reporter present, as well as the press release sign by the unit’s PRO and MC of the event, Chief Superintendent of Customs Hussaini Abdullahi, witnessed a symbolic transition of leadership as the outgoing Comptroller, now Assistant Comptroller General (ACG) Mohammed Shuaibu, formally handed over responsibility to the new Comptroller Gambo Aliyu.

The ceremony, held at the Unit’s conference hall, brought together principal officers, patrol leaders, media representatives, and well-wishers.

According to the statement, ACG Mohammed Shuaibu described the occasion as another significant milestone in his professional journey. He expressed deep appreciation to Almighty God, Comptroller General of Customs, CGC Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, PhD, and management team, for the trust and support extended to him throughout his tenure.

“Serving as Comptroller of FOU Zone ‘A’ had been both an honor and a privilege”, he said, as he commended officers of the Unit for their dedication, resilience, and teamwork, noting that their collective efforts led to notable successes in combating smuggling.

“Together, we confronted high-profile challenges and upheld the highest standards of professionalism in addressing emerging issues,” he said.

Reflecting on his seven months in office, ACG Shuaibu described the period as eventful and rewarding, adding that the Unit significantly suppressed smuggling activities through strategic operations.

He disclosed that the Unit under his watch, recorded 476 interceptions involving 761 seized items, with a total Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N10,051,812,208.00.

He put the seized items to include: 23,000 bags of foreign parboiled rice (equivalent to 38 trailer loads); 94 used vehicles (tokunbo); 2,350 kg of Cannabis Sativa; as well as 1,820 jerrycans of PMS

Other remarkable seizures according to him comprised of 15 assorted rifles; 4,841 rounds of ammunition; two (2) Industrial Drones; 25 kg of crystal methamphetamine; four (4) cylinders of explosives (50 kg each, made in Russia), as well as $20,000 USD and 110,000 CFA (worth N31 million)

Again, he also disclosed another enforcement feat of eight (8) containers of expired pharmaceutical products valued at N7.5 billion which were handed over to NAFDAC for further action.

On revenue recovery, ACG Shuaibu did handsomely well as he stated that his led Unit intensified compliance checks on questionable import and export consignments, issuing Demand Notices (DNs) that generated N419,202,459.85.

He however congratulated his successor, Comptroller GI Aliyu, while expressing confidence that the new leadership would consolidate on the Unit’s achievements and introduce fresh strategies for enhanced performance.

Meanwhile, in the remarks of the incoming Controller of the unit, Comptroller, Gombo Aliyu, thanked the CGC and management for the opportunity to serve in this strategic capacity, acknowledging the outstanding contributions of his predecessor.

While emphasizing that the Unit’s vital role in combating smuggling and safeguarding Nigeria’s economic interests, particularly within the strategically sensitive Lagos operational corridor, Comptroller Aliyu outlined his key priorities, which include: Strengthening enforcement operations; Upholding professionalism; Discipline, and Integrity,

Enhancing collaboration with security agencies and stakeholders, Improving officers’ welfare and capacity development, Promoting open communication, transparency, and teamwork

He also further highlighted three guiding principles that will shape his new led administration, which include, Change Management, Compliance Management and Reputational Management

He thereafter called for unity, dedication, and renewed commitment from officers, assuring them of responsible and constructive engagement with the media, while wishing the outgone Controller of the unit, ACG Shuaibu, continued success in his future endeavors.

The change of baton event was concluded with the presentation of gifts by the Customs Officers’ Wives Association (COWA) and the officers and men of the Unit, followed by the ceremonial cutting of the cake.
